Synthetic macro fibers per the Slab on Deck Institute (SDI) 2012 Standard Specification for composite decks may be used at a minimum dosage of 4.0 lbs. / CY as an alternate to wire mesh as a crack control reinforcement.
Synthetic macro fibers eliminate the need to store and then hoist sheets or rolls of wire mesh to each deck as well as the nearly impossible task of properly placing the wire mesh in the proper cross section of the concrete.
The picture below shows a project at Millcreek Manor Senior Living Center in Erie, PA. The slab on metal deck project utilized 4.0 lbs. / CY of 2 ¼” FORTA-FERRO®. FORTA-FERRO® was used to replace the wire mesh in 4 of the slab on metal decks.
